[2 Days, 1 Night] Hakone and Odawara Food and Hot Spring Travelogue [Visited October 2025]

[Day 1] Departure: Tokyo Station - Odawara Station

Starting today, my wife and I will go on a trip to Hakone for 2 days and 1 night.

I have plans until the afternoon, so I will take the Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station around 5:00 pm.

If you want to go to Hakone, I think the common route is to take the Romance Car from Shinjuku to Hakone Yumoto Station.

It takes about 30 minutes from where I currently live to Shinjuku, plus 2 and a half hours by Romance Car, for a total of about 3 hours.

In that case, it takes 30 minutes by Shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Odawara Station, 10 minutes from Odawara to Hakone Yumoto Station, and about 1 hour including the time to go to Tokyo Station, so I decided to take the route via Odawara.

The Shinkansen is a short ride of about 30 minutes, but this time I decided to ride the green car for a little more luxury.

I hadn't really eaten lunch yet, so I headed over to fill my stomach with yakitori from Kokugikan and katsu sandwiches from Maisen.

[Day 1] Odawara ~ Hotel

Once you arrive at Odawara, take the bus immediately.

If you miss your train, the next one will be 30 minutes later and you won't be able to make it in time for your hotel meal. .

I was able to get on the bus safely and arrived at Futago-jaya, the bus stop closest to the hotel where I would be staying today.

Since it's on the Lake Ashi/Moto-Hakone Port side, it takes a long time to get there, and I think we were on the bus for more than an hour because there were delays due to traffic jams along the way.

[Day 2] Hakone Pirate Ship

After checking out, take a bus to the former Hakone Port.

From there, board the Hakone pirate ship.

Unfortunately, it was raining that day, and it was quite cold even at the end of October.

Also, about 80% of the passengers were from overseas, and the announcements on the ship were in English.

The sound quality of Indian English + speakers made listening seriously difficult. .

Personally, I get seasick easily, but I was able to get through the trip without getting particularly sick.

[Day 2] Hakone Ropeway Togendai ~ Owakudani

You will arrive at Togendai Port in about 25 minutes.

Immediately transfer to the Hakone Ropeway and head towards Owakudani.

It was late October, and the leaves were just starting to turn red, so I had the impression that the peak was just around the corner.

Originally, I thought I would just eat lunch while walking around. .

It was raining, windy, and colder than I expected, so I couldn't walk around eating, so I decided to sit down and have lunch.

This is Hakone, a tourist destination.

If you go into a random restaurant, there is a high chance that you will find food that is expensive but not very tasty, with tourist quality and tourist prices. .

[Day 2] Hakone Yumoto Station

After dinner, take the Hakone Mountain Railway to Hakone Yumoto Station.

I almost fell asleep and arrived in the blink of an eye.

There are arcades around the souvenir shops and restaurants around the station, so you can have fun without worrying about the rain.

I spent some time buying some souvenirs.

After purchasing, I have nothing else to do, so I head to Odawara Station.

You will arrive at Odawara Station in about 10 minutes.

Kill time by wandering around Minaka Odawara, which is directly connected to Odawara Station.

I was able to enjoy ingredients from the Odawara area as well as wine and sake.

I would like to visit again when I visit Odawara.

After dinner, board the Shinkansen and head to Tokyo Station to end your trip.

Hakone free pass

For this trip, I used the Hakone Free Pass, which allows unlimited rides on vehicles near Hakone.

It is valid for 2 days (sometimes valid for 3 days) and the price varies depending on the departure station, but this time from Odawara Station the fare was 6,000 yen.

Let's calculate the individual charges for this move. .

I didn't do any sightseeing on the first day, so I was barely able to get my money back, but the ticket is valid for 2 days, so if you travel normally, I think you can get your money's worth easily.

There are also tickets that are valid for 3 days without changing the price that much, so I think you will get an even better deal in this case.

Hakone Free Pass requires you to show the QR code to board the train.

I use a transportation IC card for buses and trains, but I think it was also great because it saved me the hassle of not having to buy a ticket every time I went to the Hakone Pirate Ship or the ropeway.

Radio waves are required to display the QR code, so I use Rakuten Mobile as my main line, but there were times when I was out of range on the ropeway.

When I told the staff that I was out of service area and couldn't display it, they responded flexibly by asking me to show it at the next boarding stop.

Basically, there is radio waves, and in case of an emergency, you can take care of it like this, so I think you can feel safe.

If you're planning on sightseeing along Hakone's golden routes, such as pirate ships and ropeways, we recommend you consider it.

If you are simply traveling by bus from the hotel to the station or destination without taking the Golden Route, I don't think you need the Hakone Free Pass.

Closing Thoughts

Although it was a little rough, I was able to enjoy Hakone and Odawara to the fullest.

I visited Hakone for the first time in about three years since the coronavirus pandemic, and there have been a lot of foreign tourists.

I didn't find the place to be noisy or have bad manners like I see on TV or social media, so foreign tourists who spend their money in Japan are welcome.

After talking with my wife, I realized that I would like to stay in the hot springs for a little longer, so next time I would like to go on a trip of about 2 nights and 3 days, with one day spent soaking in the hot springs instead of sightseeing.
